The Three-Arena Framework

This is a digest. Read the full article in Chinese.

An overseas brand reputation audit checks three arenas, communities (Reddit and vertical forums), comment sections (YouTube and TikTok), and AI answers (ChatGPT and Perplexity), asking the same three questions in each: what are users asking, are competitors there, and are you there?

Neither "no bad news so far" nor "honestly, no idea" substitutes for verification. How users discuss your category on Reddit, what questions pile up under related YouTube videos, and what an AI says when a buyer asks it directly are all public evidence. You can check them before spending a dollar on marketing.

In each arena, the audit is the same drill: search, observe, record. Search your brand name and your category terms. Observe who gets recommended, in what tone, citing what sources. Record links, dates, and exact quotes so the next audit has something to compare against.

02

What to Check in Each Arena

Each arena has its own signals worth recording.

  • Communities: search your brand name, spelling variants, and "brand + review / problem / vs" on Reddit, then search category terms without your brand. Note mention volume and recency, the tone of discussions, where you sit in top threads, and each subreddit's rules on brand participation.
  • Comment sections: find the top-viewed category and competitor videos on YouTube and TikTok. Note how dense the discussion is, which way sentiment leans, and any unusual signals such as identical wording repeated across different videos. Record that repeated wording as is, without drawing conclusions about who posted it or whether it was coordinated.
  • AI answers: ask a set of real buyer questions on ChatGPT and Perplexity, split into direct-name, unbranded recommendation, and comparison questions. Note whether you appear, whether the description is accurate, and which sources the AI cites. The citation list is one input for prioritizing where content goes next; before acting on it, also verify platform relevance, participation rules, source quality, and content fit.

Log every finding with a link, a date, and the exact wording. Screenshots without context age badly.

Four Common Findings, and Why One Audit Is Not Enough

Audit results usually fall into four types, each with its own fix. Absence: no meaningful mentions were found across the platforms and questions this audit covered, which does not mean no reputation exists anywhere; the fix is building a real, compliant presence (see the Reddit marketing guide). One consumer hardware Reddit program ran under each subreddit's posted rules, with a link and screenshot kept per item and 1,100+ comments manually reviewed. At the week-one check in July 2026, 77% of first-week posts were still live (observed). Misstatement: AI or users get your facts wrong, so fix the supply of accurate, citable content. Negativity: tag negative threads early and respond factually in the open (see comment-section marketing). Concentrated competitor presence: in this audit's sample, a few competitor names appeared with concentrated frequency, so fill your position in the same threads with real experience, without disparaging anyone.

One audit is a snapshot, not a verdict: AI answers drift, and threads get buried or deleted. For the AI measurement method (frozen question sets, repeated rounds, why one screenshot is not evidence), read How to Measure AI Visibility. For communities and comment sections, archive quotes with links, dates, and context, log any thread that later disappears, re-check on an agreed cadence, and add a round for product launches or new markets. Comparing against a baseline shows change; whether a specific action caused that change requires additional evidence and cannot be assumed.

FAQ

How do I audit my brand's overseas reputation?
Check three arenas with public evidence: search your brand and category terms on Reddit and vertical forums, read the comment sections of top category videos on YouTube and TikTok, and ask ChatGPT and Perplexity a set of real buyer questions. In each arena, answer three questions: what are users asking, are competitors there, and are you there?
What if the audit finds nothing about my brand?
It means no meaningful mentions were observed within the platforms and questions the audit covered, not that no reputation exists anywhere. The fix is building a real, compliant presence in communities that allow it, and supplying accurate content that AI can cite.
How often should I re-run the audit?
Treat the first audit as a baseline: freeze the question set, keep links and screenshots. Then re-test on an agreed cadence: re-run the AI question set, re-check communities and comment sections, and add a round when you launch a product or enter a new market.
