The short answer

AI brand monitoring means checking, on a schedule, what ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI answers say when buyers ask about your category: whether you are named, who is named instead, how you are described, and which websites the answer is built from.

  • Just starting? Run a free baseline first (below) so you know which questions and engines matter before paying for prompt volume.
  • Enterprise with budget: Profound.
  • Mid-size team or agency: Peec AI or Otterly.AI.
  • Already pay for Semrush or Ahrefs: start with their AI add-on.
  • Selling in China too: most Western tools do not cover DeepSeek, Doubao or Qwen. Our free test does.

Try it free: does AI recommend your brand?

Before you buy a tool, get a baseline. We ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Qwen, Doubao and DeepSeek five buyer questions about your category and show who gets named and which sites they cite. Free, no sign-up, about 3 minutes.

How we compared them

We looked at what a marketing team actually needs from an AI brand monitoring tool, in this order:

  • Engine coverage: which assistants are queried, and whether that changes by plan.
  • Source and citation data: the pages each answer relied on. This is what you act on.
  • Competitor view: share of voice against named competitors, not only your own mentions.
  • Prompt control: whether you write your own buyer questions or rely on a pre-built index.
  • Cost per tracked question: headline prices hide prompt and engine limits.

1. MaxGrowth free AI visibility test

Our free AI visibility test asks six assistants (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and China’s Qwen, Doubao and DeepSeek) five buyer questions about your category and brand. The report shows whether you are named, your position, which competitors are named instead, how each assistant describes you, and which websites the answers cite. You can re-test later and compare.

  • Good for: a free baseline before buying a tool; brands selling in both Western markets and China.
  • Limits: five questions per test, two tests a day. Google AI Overviews is not covered by the free test (no public API); it is part of our free GEO audit.
  • Paid option: weekly monitoring from $99/month, or a managed AI brand monitoring service that adds Reddit and social mentions.
05

2. Profound

Profound is built for large brands. It tracks answers across the major assistants, reports visibility and sentiment against competitors, and analyses the sources behind answers. It also offers analytics on AI crawler activity on your own site.

  • Good for: enterprise teams with many products and markets.
  • Watch out for: the entry tier is limited (reported as ChatGPT-only); full engine coverage is sold on custom enterprise pricing.
06

3. Peec AI

Peec AI tracks a set of prompts you define and reports visibility, position and sentiment by engine, plus the sources and URLs that appear in answers. Paid plans include unlimited seats, which suits agencies.

  • Good for: marketing teams and agencies that know which buyer questions to track.
  • Watch out for: plans are priced by prompt count and some engines are add-ons, so cost rises with coverage.
07

4. Otterly.AI

Otterly.AI has the lowest paid entry point among dedicated AI visibility tools. It monitors brand mentions and link citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI answers, with more engines on higher plans.

  • Good for: small teams and freelancers starting regular monitoring.
  • Watch out for: the cheapest plan covers a small number of prompts; check engine coverage per plan.
08

5. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit

Semrush sells AI visibility as an add-on toolkit: an AI visibility score, share of voice against competitors, the prompts where you appear, and how AI describes your brand.

  • Good for: teams already working in Semrush who want AI data next to SEO data.
  • Watch out for: extra domains, users and prompts are billed on top of the base add-on.
09

6. Ahrefs Brand Radar

Ahrefs Brand Radar uses a large pre-built index of AI answers based on real search queries, so you can see brand and competitor mentions without writing prompts yourself.

  • Good for: competitive research and share of voice across a whole market.
  • Watch out for: you see the questions in the index, not necessarily your buyers’ exact questions; pricing depends on which AI indexes you add.
10

7. Brand24

Brand24 is a social listening tool: it tracks mentions across social media, news, blogs, forums and podcasts, with AI sentiment analysis. It is not primarily an AI-answer tracker, but the discussions it finds (Reddit threads, reviews, forum posts) are often the sources AI assistants cite.

  • Good for: pairing with an AI visibility tool to watch the community sources behind AI answers.
  • Watch out for: it does not tell you what ChatGPT or Perplexity answer for your category.
11

Which tool should you pick?

  • Budget under $50/month: run the free test monthly, or Otterly.AI’s entry plan.
  • You already pay for an SEO suite: Semrush or Ahrefs add-on first; switch only if you need your own prompts or more engines.
  • Agency managing many brands: Peec AI (unlimited seats) or Profound for enterprise clients.
  • Brand sold in China as well as overseas: you need DeepSeek, Doubao and Qwen coverage; start with our free test.
  • You want someone to act on the data: a tool shows the gaps; fixing them means getting onto the cited sources. That is what our GEO service does.

FAQ

What is AI brand monitoring?

It is tracking what AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews say about your brand and category over time: whether you are recommended, how you are described, which competitors are named, and which sources the answers cite.

Is there a free AI brand monitoring tool?

Yes. Our free AI visibility test checks six assistants with five buyer questions, two tests a day, no sign-up. Several paid tools also offer free trials.

How often should I check AI visibility?

Weekly or every two weeks is enough for most brands. AI answers vary from run to run, so look at the trend across several checks, not one result.

How is this different from social listening?

Social listening tracks what people post. AI brand monitoring tracks what assistants answer. They are linked: assistants often cite Reddit threads, reviews and forum posts, so you usually need both.

Can these tools track DeepSeek, Doubao or Qwen?

Most Western tools focus on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google’s AI answers. Our free test and monitoring plans include DeepSeek, Doubao and Qwen.
