Short answer

  • Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Mode beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible.
  • AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so the links they show differ. Check both, separately.
  • AI Mode conversations are multi-turn; pages that answer the natural follow-up questions get more chances to be cited.
02

How Google AI Mode chooses sources

AI Mode is a conversational search experience built on the same Search index. Google’s documentation states (AI features and your website):

  • There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.
  • AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary.
  • Both may use query fan-out: issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources.

The practical difference: AI Mode is often used for longer, comparative and follow-up questions (“which is better for a small team”, “what about pricing”). Content that anticipates the next question, and third-party discussions that compare options, are what it draws on.

Reddit’s role in Google AI Mode answers

In Ahrefs Brand Radar data for September 2026, reddit.com was the #1 cited domain in Google AI Mode answers, at 17.9% of citations among the top-50 sources (Ahrefs). Shares move: Semrush tracked ChatGPT search citing Reddit in close to 60% of responses in early August 2025 and about 10% by mid-September 2025 (Semrush). Treat any single number as a snapshot. Partnerships give engines structured access to Reddit content: Google (Feb 2024) and OpenAI (May 2024).

What this means in practice: when buyers ask “best X” or “is X worth it”, the answer often quotes a real discussion. You cannot write that discussion yourself, but you can make sure your brand is represented accurately in it:

  • Find the threads already cited for your prompts and read what people actually say about you and competitors.
  • Answer questions where you have real expertise, from a clearly labelled brand or employee account.
  • Follow each subreddit’s self-promotion rules; ask moderators before an AMA, a launch post or a giveaway.
  • Correct factual errors politely with a source; never argue with reviewers.
  • Never use vote manipulation, undisclosed accounts or paid posts disguised as users. They break Reddit’s rules and tend to be removed, which also removes the citation.

This is the work of our Reddit community marketing service: subreddit research, rules-first participation and moderator cooperation.

10-point diagnostic checklist

  1. Indexed and snippet-eligible (URL Inspection).
  2. Ranks for the head query and for the comparison and “for [use case]” variants.
  3. Has sections that answer the obvious follow-ups: price model, alternatives, who it is not for, setup time.
  4. States limitations honestly; comparative answers favour sources that admit trade-offs.
  5. Has a comparison table in HTML, not an image.
  6. Your brand is present in the forum and Reddit discussions AI Mode cites for comparisons, through open participation within each subreddit’s rules.
  7. Review and listing sites carry your current facts.
  8. Search Console AI opt-out is off.
  9. You check AI Mode answers separately from AI Overviews; links differ.
  10. You log multi-turn prompts, not only single queries.

How to measure Google AI Mode visibility

AI Mode data is reported with AI Overviews in Search Console (Web search type and the generative AI report). Because answers are conversational, keep a log of short prompt sequences, for example a head query followed by two follow-ups, and record the links in each turn.
