Short answer

To rank in Google AI Overviews, a page only needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet; Google adds no extra technical requirement. What decides selection is core Search ranking plus query fan-out: rank on page one for the question and its sub-questions, answer each in visible text, keep the Search Console AI opt-out off, and be represented accurately on the forums and reviews Google shows.

  • Google says there are no extra technical requirements: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. No special schema, no llms.txt.
  • AI Overviews draw on core Search ranking and run several related searches (query fan-out), so pages that cover the sub-questions well get more chances.
  • Since June 2026, Search Console has a generative AI performance report and a site-level opt-out; make sure the opt-out is off.

How Google AI Overviews chooses sources

Google’s documentation is unusually direct (AI features and your website, AI optimization guide):

  • To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. There are no additional technical requirements.
  • AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources (“query fan-out”) to build a response.
  • AI features are rooted in Google’s core Search ranking and quality systems. Structured data is not required, and there is no special markup to add.
  • AI Overviews are shown only when Google’s systems judge them additive to classic Search results.

So the work is SEO done well, plus coverage of the follow-up questions fan-out creates, plus presence on the other pages Google shows for the same query. That includes forums: Google expanded its Reddit partnership in February 2024.

Reddit’s role in Google AI Overviews answers

In Ahrefs Brand Radar data for September 2026, reddit.com was the #2 cited domain in Google AI Overviews answers, at 18.5% of citations among the top-50 sources (Ahrefs). Shares move: Semrush tracked ChatGPT search citing Reddit in close to 60% of responses in early August 2025 and about 10% by mid-September 2025 (Semrush). Treat any single number as a snapshot. Partnerships give engines structured access to Reddit content: Google (Feb 2024) and OpenAI (May 2024).

What this means in practice: when buyers ask “best X” or “is X worth it”, the answer often quotes a real discussion. You cannot write that discussion yourself, but you can make sure your brand is represented accurately in it:

  • Find the threads already cited for your prompts and read what people actually say about you and competitors.
  • Answer questions where you have real expertise, from a clearly labelled brand or employee account.
  • Follow each subreddit’s self-promotion rules; ask moderators before an AMA, a launch post or a giveaway.
  • Correct factual errors politely with a source; never argue with reviewers.
  • Never use vote manipulation, undisclosed accounts or paid posts disguised as users. They break Reddit’s rules and tend to be removed, which also removes the citation.

This is the work of our Reddit community marketing service: subreddit research, rules-first participation and moderator cooperation.

10-point diagnostic checklist

  1. The page is indexed (URL Inspection in Search Console) and eligible for a snippet: no nosnippet on the content you want quoted.
  2. It already ranks on page one or two for the question or its sub-questions; AI features draw on core ranking systems.
  3. Each sub-question a buyer might ask (price, comparison, suitability, setup) has a clear passage or section, because Google fans the query out into related searches.
  4. The answer is in visible text, not only in images, video or click-to-expand elements.
  5. The page shows first-hand experience: tests, photos, data, named authors.
  6. Facts match across your site, Merchant Center (for products) and Business Profile.
  7. Your brand is present, accurately, in the forums and review pages Google shows for the same query.
  8. The Search Console AI opt-out is off for your property.
  9. You check the generative AI performance report and Web search-type performance monthly.
  10. You record the AI answer and its links for a fixed list of queries, with dates.

Step by step: how to rank in Google AI Overviews

  1. Confirm eligibility: URL Inspection shows the page indexed, no nosnippet on the answer, and the Search Console AI opt-out is off.
  2. List the buyer question and 5–10 sub-questions it fans out into (price, comparison, “is it worth it”, setup, alternatives).
  3. Write one visible passage per sub-question that answers it in the first 1–2 sentences, then gives evidence (tests, data, named author).
  4. Search each question in Google and note which forums, review pages and comparison pages rank; make sure your brand is described accurately there.
  5. Improve classic ranking for the page: internal links from related pages, a clear title that matches the question, fresh dates when facts change.
  6. Log the AI Overview answer and its links for a fixed query list each month, and compare with the Search Console generative AI report.

Common mistakes that keep brands out of Google AI Overviews

MistakeWhy it hurts / what to do instead
Adding special schema or llms.txt for AI OverviewsGoogle says neither is required or used for AI features; spend the time on the answer passages.
Hiding the answer in tabs, images or videoAI features quote visible text; put the key sentence in plain HTML.
Leaving the Search Console AI opt-out onIt removes the whole site from AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Blocking Google-Extended to “protect” contentIt does not affect AI Overviews inclusion, but it can confuse audits; decide on Gemini use separately.
Covering only the head queryFan-out means sub-questions decide which pages get cited; one passage per sub-question.
Posting promotional threads on RedditThey break subreddit rules and get removed, which removes the citation too.

FAQ

How long does it take to appear in Google AI Overviews?

There is no fixed time. A page first has to be indexed and rank for the question or its sub-questions; after that it can be used as a supporting link the next time the AI Overview is generated. Track it with a dated query log and the Search Console generative AI report.

Which sources does Google AI Overviews cite most?

In Ahrefs Brand Radar data for September 2026 (US), reddit.com was the #2 cited domain in AI Overviews, at 18.5% of citations among the top-50 cited domains. Shares change month to month, so treat any figure as a snapshot.

How do I get my website into Google AI Overviews?

Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, with no extra technical requirements. In practice, rank well for the query and its related sub-questions, answer them clearly in visible text, and be represented on the other pages Google shows for that query.

Do I need schema markup or llms.txt for AI Overviews?

No. Google states that structured data is not required for its generative AI search features and that Google Search ignores llms.txt. Schema can still help other search features.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?

Google says Google-Extended controls use of content for Gemini training and grounding and does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search. AI Overviews are controlled by Search settings such as snippet controls and the Search Console opt-out.

How can I see AI Overview traffic in Search Console?

AI Overview data is included in the Performance report under the Web search type, and Google added a dedicated generative AI performance report in June 2026.

What is query fan-out?

Google describes it as issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build an AI response. Pages that answer the likely sub-questions clearly have more chances to be used as supporting links.
