To rank in Microsoft Copilot, first get indexed and ranking in Bing: Copilot sends a short query to Bing and builds its answer from Bing results, so a page Bing has not indexed cannot be cited. Then follow Microsoft's own content guidance — clear headings, self-contained passages, JSON-LD schema, no key answers hidden in tabs, PDFs or images — and track citations in Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report.

Short answer
- Copilot sends a short search query to Bing and builds its answer from Bing results. If Bing has not indexed your page, Copilot cannot cite it.
- Microsoft publishes concrete content guidance: SEO fundamentals, JSON-LD schema, clear headings, self-contained passages, and no key answers hidden in tabs, PDFs or images.
- Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report (public preview since February 2026) that shows how often your pages are cited.
How Microsoft Copilot chooses sources
Microsoft documents that when web search is enabled, Copilot generates a short query, sends it to the Bing search service and composes the response from the results; the queries appear as web search citations (Microsoft Learn). That documentation covers Microsoft 365 Copilot; Microsoft describes consumer Copilot as powered by Bing’s index too.
Unlike Google, Microsoft has published specific content guidance for AI answers (Microsoft Advertising, Oct 2025):
| Microsoft recommends | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Traditional SEO fundamentals: crawlability, metadata, internal links, backlinks | Walls of text without structure |
| Schema markup as JSON-LD | Key answers hidden in tabs or expandable sections |
| Headings that act as chapter titles | Core information only in PDFs |
| Self-contained passages, lists, tables and Q&A | Critical details only inside images |
Note the difference from Google, which says structured data is not required for its AI features. Copilot and Google are different systems; follow each one’s own guidance.
Reddit’s role in Microsoft Copilot answers
In Ahrefs Brand Radar data for September 2026, reddit.com did not appear in Copilot’s top-50 cited domains (Ahrefs), unlike every other engine on this page. Copilot leans on Bing results, so community threads matter less here than your own pages and Bing-indexed reviews. Shares move: Semrush tracked ChatGPT search citing Reddit in close to 60% of responses in early August 2025 and about 10% by mid-September 2025 (Semrush). Treat any single number as a snapshot. Partnerships give engines structured access to Reddit content: Google (Feb 2024) and OpenAI (May 2024).
What this means in practice: when buyers ask “best X” or “is X worth it”, the answer often quotes a real discussion. You cannot write that discussion yourself, but you can make sure your brand is represented accurately in it:
- Find the threads already cited for your prompts and read what people actually say about you and competitors.
- Answer questions where you have real expertise, from a clearly labelled brand or employee account.
- Follow each subreddit’s self-promotion rules; ask moderators before an AMA, a launch post or a giveaway.
- Correct factual errors politely with a source; never argue with reviewers.
- Never use vote manipulation, undisclosed accounts or paid posts disguised as users. They break Reddit’s rules and tend to be removed, which also removes the citation.
This is the work of our Reddit community marketing service: subreddit research, rules-first participation and moderator cooperation.
10-point diagnostic checklist
- Your site is verified in Bing Webmaster Tools and key pages are indexed in Bing (not only Google).
- Bingbot is not blocked by robots.txt or CDN bot rules.
- You submit changes with IndexNow or the Bing URL submission API so Bing sees updates quickly.
- Pages use JSON-LD schema that matches visible content (Organization, Product, FAQ where appropriate).
- Headings describe the content below them; each section can stand alone.
- Key facts are in HTML text, not PDFs, images or tabs.
- Comparison tables are HTML tables.
- You appear on the review and listing sites that rank in Bing for your category.
- You check the Bing AI Performance report monthly.

How to measure Microsoft Copilot visibility
Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report (public preview, February 2026) shows total citations, average cited pages, sample grounding queries and page-level citation counts across Copilot, Bing AI summaries and some partner integrations. Microsoft notes it does not indicate ranking or a page’s role in an answer, and it does not report clicks (Bing Webmaster blog).
